So here is my head canon for female TFs in IDW. It’s my own opinion, it didn’t mean I think other people’s opinions are wrong. I just want to write down my idea. =)
I think the cybertronian is biologically genderless/sexless. We see them use “he” as their default pronoun because it’s the predominant/default pronoun used by Earth people. If they interact with a female-dominated species, then “she” will be their default pronoun. If they interact with a species that has more than two gender/sex, they will choose one pronoun used by the said species that suits them. And if they interact with a genderless species (like a fellow mechanic species), then great, no need to worry about those complicated organic terms.
The “female” TFs such as Elita-one, Firestar, Moonracer are a group of TFs that left Cybertron during the early stage of the civil war like The Circle of light. And the reason why they use “she” as their permanent default pronoun is because they formed a tight bonding (economically, culturally, and emotionally) with an organic species after they settled down from their exile. Because the species reproduces by a form of parthenogenesis, so they use “she” among themselves (or more logically, being identified by other species as an all female species. They happen to look more feminine in our perception too, just for convenience’s sake). As time goes, as a result of their rare but great inter-racial relationship, those TFs started to use “she” as their default pronoun, even when they don’t have to or when they are dealing with species that uses “he” as the default pronoun for TFs. They just don’t bother to change it anymore.
I personally like it more if the “lady” TFs identify themselves as “female” because they choose to and feel comfortable of it, and not because of their bodies or mind are “different” from the other “male” TFs. I want them use the term “she” without the hint of it being some abnormal condition *cough* Furman *cough* They just like to be addressed as “she” more even though it doesn’t mean anything to them biologically.
And those classical G1 female TFs look more “organic” and “traditionally female-like” because they modified themselves over time to resemble more like their organic ally (we already have space shark and giant robot rat, so why not some alien ladies?), while those female TFs who are not so traditionally female looking, such as Strika or Serket simply choose to look this way because they like it more. They can all identify themselves as female regardless of their physical looks (they are transformers, after all).
Imagine a group of lady TFs with all kinds of shape, size, and alt-mode. I just want to see that, OK ;_;
