Overall, I like the pace of this issue. There are many good character moments. We also know what Shockwave is scheming about too.
- Megatron & Bumblebee: Although I like their exchange, with Megatron focused on military value while BBB more on the casualty (half of the cybertronian population? wow), I do feel the transition of Megatron’s mind too rush and unconscionable. There’s not a bit of evidence showing Megatron doing any form of introspection, I don’t think he will change mind merely because of the Necrotitan incidence (well, I’ll be damned if it is reviled later that it’s all Megs’ deception).
- Megatron & Ratchet: It feels natural and fluent. Megatron, even in his worst, strikes me as a person who still respects people with scientists/medical skills (of course, they better work for him. Rossum is a good example). It’s easy to imagine Megatron respects Ratchet for his profession since he has a miner background. Perhaps Megatron saw many mining accidents and he respected those field medics who saved the lives of his mining friends. That’s why he wanted to be a doctor even though it’s an unrealistic wish back then. It really adds depth to his character and showed that not everyone is born twisted. If there’s more description like this about Megatron in previous issues, the whole “Megatron changing his view” scene with BBB would be much more convincing.
- Prowl & Chromedome: To be honest, I’m a bit confused. I think JB and JR have really different takes on Prowl and they didn’t communicate well in this part? Barber’s Prowl, as shown in previous issues of RID, is a bit confused after the whole Devasprowler incident, but he is trying to be more open after the others reached out to him. That’s why he is a bit awkward about it? But Roberts’ Prowl is still a cold blooded jerk who is still holding on the whole “I’m sacrifice you because of greater good” crap?
If this is not a character inconsistency, I’m thinking that perhaps this is Prowl’s defense mechanism. He knows he is wrong, but he is afraid to admit it and he is more afraid to have to change. That’s why he desperately hold onto his ideal, because he has nothing else to hold on. It’s really sad to think so. Because no one else is gonna feel sorry for him.
- Prowl & Ultra Magnus: On the contrary, I like how the confrontation subtly showed Magnus’ character growth. We already know that Magnus is not cold under the thick armor (puns!) and Magnus, being mostly in the front line and all, has the right to finally call out Prowl’s shit (in his POV, Prowl is an a-hole). And what Magnus said is correct from his angle, he is always more on the soldiers’ side after all. That’s why even though everyone is afraid of him, he is still respected (said in MTMTE), unlike Prowl. Prowl’s counter-threat of calling out his true identity is useless now since Magnus/Minimus Ambus already reviled this side of him. Magnus has nothing to hide.
Again, this makes me feel sorry for Prowl because even though I would hate him if I was a soldier under his command/control, I am realistic to know people like him are necessary in real world and yes, sometimes sacrifice is necessary for “greater good”. It’s just… nobody’s gonna like it if they are the ones who’s been sacrificed, and people who make the call is bound to be hated.
- I still not sure how I feel about Shockwave’s grand plan? Because the more “dangerous” “unstoppable” it seems, the more it makes me go “meh”? I had a feelings that the minicons are like the vehicons in TFP anyway. Convenient cannon fodders *shrugs*
- When will they leave Dead Universe? I’m getting a bit tired of that too. Even Cyclonus’ condition cannot stir me now since it already goes on forever.
